I just have a quick question. I have really taken a liking to some of the ORA SPS corals and I'm looking to get my hands on a couple. There are a couple of stores that are within about an hour drive for me that carry a good variety. I have never been to these stores before and just wanted to get an idea on what decent prices are for these corals.

I just wanted to get a feel for what I should expect before going there and getting hosed.

Thanks for any advice on what I should be looking for price-wise.

Most ORA pieces are around $30-$40. (Green/Pink Birds, Nathans Green Millie, Scrips millie, Chips Acro, etc.)

Some pieces are around $40-$50. (Ora Blue Green Tort)

Then some pieces go for $60-$70. (Hawkins Blue echinata, Phil's Granulosa, Pearlberry, ORAgon Tort)

I wouldn't pay more than $50 for any of the pieces but.... I guess that depends on how bad you want it.

I paid $65 for the Pearlberry and it RTNd on me. Go figure.

Good luck with your trip.

+1 for the prices above....I have seen some stores that sell for about 10-30% more then what is listed but those are usually the supposed "higher end" stores.

Try finding local reefers in your area and buy frags....usually a ton cheaper and much hardier IME.

I have a few of the higher end ORA frags...So far the have been healthy and have not lost any of there color. Great poly extension, and great color. I paid around $70 for one of them and $60 for the others...I have the Pearlberry, ORAgon tort, and Hawkins....I am waiting for that purple plasma on the next shipmment.

When I got them I was worried about them losing color, I acclimated them with my T-5's until I put them under the 250K Radium...No color loss under the T-5s for 3-weeks, and good rate of encrusting. Under 250K they are growing great!

Hope this helps.

Awesome thank you for the responses: here are some of the prices that I found and thought they were a little high. I found someone in the upstate that has a couple frags so I might just get them from him.

Oregon Tort: 69
Pearlberry: 88
Hawkins: 89
Phils Granulosa: 89
Dustin's Deepwater: 69

The only one that seemed reasonable was the Tort. Guess I might just see what they look like and see if I can bargain with the store. Just seemed a little steep and don't want something to happen to a piece that expensive.

I'd say those are all pretty reasonable prices. I fairly recently quit doing business with ORA, but all of those prices are within standard mark-ups for an LFS. I've seen online shops sell some of those same corals for $150 each, so it seems like the prices have dropped quite a lot in the past 2 months.

I think they are pretty high. I'm sure you can get them cheaper. LiveAquaria had them for $129 which was the highest I saw. My LFS sold them for $60. They pay around $30 for them so charging anything over $70 is a ripoff IMO.

Also are you sure that it's the Oragon Tort and not the Blue/Green tort... cause the Oragon is the newest one on that list and should be the same, if not higher.

i just bought the Hawkins Blue echinata from one of my, for just under 60.00, got a really nice size of yellow fuzzy for under 50. crazy like 4" tall and about 2 inches round, most of my LFS's have been fair with the ORA prices i think.

Thanks for the advice everyone. It is actually from an online vendor that is about an hour and a half drive from me. I might just drive up there and check his stock out as well as another LFS that I heard had some as well. Just don't want to get ripped off. I think I have a pretty good idea what they charge now.

What was your reason for not doing business if you dont mind me asking. I know the guys here say they are great to deal with.

I won't go into specifics about it, just that I'd had a great many problems with them. Other retailers, including some that sponsor this site, have told me that they've had similar experiences with them.

Knock on wood ive had great experance with them and Laura's a grate gal to deal with if somthing shows up broken not dead they replace it as if it were dead no questions asked there fish have been nothing short of bullet proof for me I price mine to move 100% plus a little for shipping and some for loss as things do die.
