I have had my ORA red goniopora for about 6 months or so now..

It has always been kind of picky and temperamental (like my wife :) ) but recently it doesn't seem to open during the day.. at least not fully..

When I wake up, before the lights are on its wide open and looks full etc... flow is the same, so the only conclusion I can come to is the lighting... it's pretty close to the bottom on a rock about 6-8" above the bottom.. it is growing, but also has faded in color some..

Should I try to place it on the bottom? Any issue with it sitting on barebottom? It's on a small plug anyway..

Usually not true with the red ORA ones.. they have a pretty good track record of success... if by water quality you mean parameters..

Mag 1450
Cal 450
Alk 10

Those are all I test.. salinity 1.025..

I have had the ORA Red Goni for about a year, it's one of my most resilient corals.

My parms.

Ca 400
Alk 7-8
Mag within normal limits.
SG 1.026
Lighting LED Hydra.

Mine has been in the sand bed and in the rock work, both places it did fine. Unfortunately it's host my clowns, but seems to not stress out over it.

I would let the alk drift down if you're running a lower nutrient system.

ORA goni is a score.
Yes on the bottom and lots of flow.
Post some nutrients test #
No3 and Po4.
Sometimes a temp swing make it retract for a few days too.
Btw, I've a Goni which is 7 years, in Goni lives that is........................ seven years ;)

I think the key variable here is when the lights are off.. it's wide open and extended to the max... every morning it's flowing and blowing haha...

I just got one today in a trade this will be my first red one let me know what you guys think.

It's beautiful.

I had the same one and it died within 2 weeks. I have a purple, pink and a blueish/greenish and all those 3 have been thriving for almost a year. The red ones I tried twice both died. Not sure why.

This is mine. The coral responds well to supplements such as Acropower or Spongepower. I have noticed that if a coral is too close the Goniopora develops white types to the tentacle head, these are Nematocytes that will sting neighboring corals.

Fully extended :) sooooo nice!

We have had an ORA red for almost 5 years now - my wife won it in a drawing at MACNA 2011 and is still her favorite coral. Very hardy and has been through 4 tanks (we moved a couple of years ago and recently swapped out one of our tanks). We used to target feed it but haven't for the past year or so and doesn't seem to mind (we do feed our tanks heavily as it is).
