Hey guys, orange shoulder tang showing a bunch of darker splotches. He’s an idiot and likes to swim VERY close to the long tentacle anemone so I’m thinking burns but I just wanted to be sure.

It could very well be stings from the anemone, but having a full history of the tank and the fish is important. Here is a post about that:

Very good details and I suspect bacterial opposed to stings
How do other fish look and everyone eating?

All others look fine and all are eating like pigs including orange shoulder
Im on vacation and just checking in briefly. Jay will likely check back, if not I will chime in. With all doing well, you can safely use Ruby Rally Pro in your display tank with all inverts and coral and take a little longer to work.

Thanks for the details....they don't always tell us what the issue is, but they do help to rule other things out.

Hammer corals are also known to sting fish, and with the fish swimming near the LT anemone, we can't rule that out.
Do you see the tang scratch or flash? That can be a sign of flukes.
External bacterial infections almost always have some injury or scrape as the root cause, anything like that happen to the fish?

He's the only fish that scratches, but its usually after the cleaner shrimp gets done with him. I've seen him come out of the "cleaning station" at least 4 times a day. all other tangs let the shrimp clean them too but dont scratch after.

Ah - that is another clue! Fish posture for cleaner shrimp the most when they feel a parasite on their skin.

I'd say the fish have skin flukes. Dosing the tank 2x, 8 days apart with prazipro and good aeration can help, and it is mostly reef safe.

okay cool, I'm not one to really treat a tank anymore as I have gone the @Paul B route but I can definitely up their immune system with their food and go the natural route. and let the cleaner shrimp do their thing on the flukes ( If they do anything at all to benefit ) . I'm just glad that the fish aren't as stupid as I thought and probably aren't swimming into the nem lol

Well, active fluke infestations don’t lend themselves well to being treated just by diet, you really are just feeding the flukes better (grin).

Cleaner shrimp can slow an infection down, but won’t eliminate it.

You’ll know if the flukes start to get the upper hand - seeing a gradual increase in symptoms. You usually have time to then treat later on.

Hyposalinity is a better treatment than Prazipro, but I didn’t originally suggest that because you’d have to pull all the fish ….
