My 20 gallon aquarium has finally cycled, and I’m ready to start looking for fish to add. I know I want a variety of clownfish, and maybe a goby. I thought about adding an orange tail damsel, does anyone have experience with one? Would this be a good choice, or not?

Here’s the current set up

I’d steer clear of damsels they are notoriously aggressive and in small tanks will bully others especially once they get established.

Common name:
Blue Devil Damselfish
Blue Damselfish, Orangetail Damselfish, Sapphire Devil

I would not put one in a small tank like your's

Thanks! Many years ago my first saltwater fish was an electric blue damsel, and she was a model citizen, so just figured I’d ask.

If you want a single damsel, consider a yellow tail or an azure. They are colorful and active, stay small, and are not aggressive. They will defend their territory which is a very small area. This goes for most all chrysiptera damsels.

Almost all the damsels will have problem with other fish ina 20 gal tank. At the most you can have 3-4 small fish in this tank, I would choose very wisely, and avoid any damsel.

I agree. I always have a breeding pair of Yellow tail or Azure damsels in my tank, but my smallest tank is 65 gal. Most of the time they are in a 300+ gal. Beautiful fish, hardy and breed like clockwork. I kinda hate to see how they act in a community 20 gal tank.

Thanks for the help! I think I’m gonna stay away from them I’m trying to find really flashy fish as my 90g recently collapsed. Is there any fish y’all would recommend?

I have 3 in my 110. I wish I had 5-7 total. For me, they are wimps. My purple firefish chases them!

In a 20 gal, I would get a pair of shrimp goby (Randal, Yasha or Dracula) with their shrimp, and a Firefish, Possible a Royal Gramma

Get a Onyx Percula pair, a Randal Goby with the shrimp. I assume you mean Yellow Watchman Goby. They can turn grey, plus get pretty bid (almost 4 inches. I have seen some large Yellow watchman goby.

Thanks I’ll keep that in mind!
