Does one have to monitor orp never understood it what is the number I should be goin
It is not necessary, there are more important things to monitor. If one is running a carbon reactor or ozone it can be nice to monitor it, but in most circumstances is not necessary. Usually in newer tanks will have lower ORP and it will raise until it stabilizes, typically in the 300s.
 
i run no carbon my tank has been up and running a little over a year my apex shows that it goes up and down

One does not ever need to monitor ORP unless you are controlling ozone with it.

There is no number that is better than another, despite what some folks might claim.
