Only difference between gen1 and gen 2 is the wifi chip . You can get one directly from Orphek

Does each panel need a chip? And are they easy to install?

Yes each gen1 needs a chip to make it talk to the gen2 gateway . Its super easy to install . Take the the thumbscrews off and remove the back panel . Next you unscrew the antenna, pull the old chip up off the board , push the new chip onto the board and repeat the steps in reverse .

You will also need a new gateway, total cost to upgrade my system from v1 to v2 was just over $100

What are the differences between the gen 1 & 2? Really considering this over the new radions coming out

Gen 1 and 2 are nearly the same. Identical LEDs and spectrum, but the gen 2 has an upgraded wireless chip and supports the new gateway.
The gen 2 also has some additional powder coating on some parts. That’s about it.

To upgrade the gen 1 to work with the new gateways (pretty hard to find a gen 1 gateway now) Kris at orphek quoted $128 for both the upgraded wireless chip and the new gateway.
