gen 2 has a broader spectrum of colors and most of the circuitry more moisture resistant and lastly- better wifi capability on the gen2

Actually they have the same spectrum, the only difference is the software supposed to be better wifi connection.

What Luke said . Only difference from gen 1 to gen2 is the software and gateway . You can upgrade the gen 1 to a gen 2 with a microchip from Orphek thats super easy to install .

That's pretty wild. I may be interested in this if there truly is no difference other than the software and it's something that I can easily update. I tried googling but couldn't find anything solid on the "upgrade" process. Does anyone have a link?

You have to order the chip from Orphek . You take the top off the fixture unplug the old chip and plug the new one in , replace the top and done ... I did it with my gen 1 when they switched to gen 2 last year .
