I have used an overflow design for some years in my fish room that is both safe and inexpensive. I use them in my fish room because they can be noisy. I have been making them out of 2" PVC parts and a plastic screen. The design has overflow slots and then the screen on top acts as a safety overflow. Recently I designed another version for my 3d printer and I have been able to replace the old design with a much more efficient design. The new design has a snap on cover instead of a screen glued to the top. The tube that fits into 3/4 PVC piping is tapered for easy removal. Pull the overflow out, pull the top and its clean and ready to go back in. Right now I am printing 5 of them.
Here is a picture of the new design next to the old.

Here are the three pieces before assembly.

Assembled.

I would gladly share the files if someone else wants to print one.

When I decided to get into 3d printing, I did a lot of research and decided two things; 1) I would build my own printer so I could change and maintain it. 2) I wanted a strong frame and the best controller I could find. Here is the printer finishing a feeder ring.

A roll of filament costs about $25 each. I estimate I can make 20 of these overflows from one roll.

Have you dried making a protein skimmer? And how well does it hold up in the water. Your printer looks amazing.

Thanks,
I use acetone on all of my abs parts to improve strength and density. I have noticed some small warping on some parts after being in the water for a few weeks.
