Ouch! Broke heater in water and WOW electrocution!

Ah, Titanium... Just scrolled up... :)

Excellent...
Does anyone Aviation grade Titanium be clean enough? I got a good mate [emoji57]

:)

What are they made of? Any idea?
Where do you get them?

They look similar to a conventional outlets, except they are slightly larger and retangular. Similarly, they are made of plastic with metal components. They work by detecting the flow from the "hot" to the "neutral" leg, and if there is any fluxuation, they pop off, stopping the flow of electricity. They are readily available at local hardware stores (including the big box Home Depot and Lowes) and electrical supply houses. HERE's and example from HD.

Thanks for the help! I'll check in to this!

If they quoted you a small fortune they were trying to rip you off mate
This is what you want (but US style if that's where you live) and you can change it out yourself after isolating the power supply.

I can get them trade but they're about £15-20 for a good quality one.
Less than US$30.
Great info ty

Gfi (ground fault interuptors) are the way to go. If not. Ground the tank. I got a stainless bolt attached a wire to it with a rod at other end. Put shrink wrap over wire and bolt then ran wire out window and burried rod in the ground. Works for me

Interesting..?
You put plastic over the conductor to isolate it from earth?

Where did you make contact with the water? What is hanging in the tank/sump water for a ground?

I just re-read my last comment and I suppose it could've been directed at you AuRush,
I mean, why doesn't this forum allow me to like someone's helpful comment? Maybe something the admin needs to change in the settings

The stainless bolt itself is in the tank. You want the rod to come into contact with the earth so the electricity in your tank travels out thru the wire into the ground. I had a pump go out and kill my tank. Because it went ouy while on vacation and was putting 120v in for a week. Came hime to one heck of a mess. As I started cleaning I got zapped. You can go buy ground probes from your lfs. I just made one. And it works great. Broke a glass heater and checked the water with meter and nothing checked end of probe in ground and wammo

When you say ran to the earth, in a house what would you run the ground probe to?

the 3rd prong in a standard outlet. the ground in you house is literally all tide to a wire that goes in to the dirt outside your house.

When I got my first tank I turned my heater on outside the water to test it was working, it cracked the heater without me realizing and I had exactly the same shock...I've learnt alot since then
