Well here's our story......

My husband and I are new to this whole aquarium thing. We both love the ocean. He has been talking for months about wanting an aquarium. As he does he just wants to jump right in. I on the other hand love information. So I am doing the research part lol. I am new to this forum but it seems fantastic. Packed full of all the information a girl could need. He would love to do an aquarium with live rock and well as coral along with fish. Our goal is to try to keep all the fish from on specific area (I'm not sure if that is even possible). There is so much information out there it makes my head spin. I am hoping this whole experience will be something we both enjoy and a hobby that we both love. Thank you all in advance for the in sight and the time you spend answering my questions, because I know I will have plenty. So here's to new things, great experiences, lots of laughs and most importantly a stable and healthy tank!:):)

Wow! Awesome experience doing this together. Welcome to R2R!
The ideas you have are very possible. Keep learning, but also, like your husband wants to do, jump in, experience the fun of reefing, learn along the way and next thing you know, you will have an aquarium full of fish, corals, inverts and more, from the exact area you want.

Welcome aboard, A&MReef!

What you're talking about is a "biotope" aquarium - one which (as faithfully as possible) duplicates a little patch of a particular spot out there on the globe. Fun project, with just that spicy edge of challenge! It should be very possible to research the fish of, for instance, Sulawesi Island, and keep only those fish found there. Corals may be more difficult, as most have been aquacultured for so long that the people selling them may not know where the original colony was collected.

Welcome to reef to reef. 1st off, I am a new at this myself. But I would start small and simple. You spoke of having a tank of Live Rock (LR) and Fish (and eventually corals). That is the way I started. My first tank was a 20 Gallon Fish with Live Rock and Sand. The I moved to a 55 Gallon (LR) + Sand, Fish and Corals. Next tank for me is a 185. I migrated from Freshwater to Saltwater.

Things you need in this hobby:

Patience
Research to find out how feasible your plan is and make necessary alterations (Books, Articles, Reef2Reef, Local Clubs, and your trusted LFS - Can all be good references). AND there is a LOT to Research from Filtration to Tanks, Lighting, Livestock (Compatibility), Water Chemistry, ...

Welcome to R2R and to the hobby. Research and patience are your best friends right now. Don't be afraid to ask questions as there are plenty of people here to help.
