We own an Artisan Market in Baltimore Ohio & repurpose furniture for a living. We love the saltwater hobby & decided to combine the two ♡'s

This vintage piano was repurposed into a fish only display tank for our new location when we expanded our business.

I managed to get some photos of the progress & thought I'd share them.

We were donated the piano from a local church and modified it a bit for aesthetic purposes.

We purchased the 90 gallon set up used. It was up and running with rock & no livestock when we purchased it.
We got it from a local hobbyist who had sold his fish and was getting out of the hobby.

We trashed all the original sand & water and only kept the 100+ pounds of live rock.

We set it back up with new sand & ro saltwater. We waited 3 weeks and added a few fish and a clean up crew.

To the sump, we added some of the smaller live rock pieces, a sandwich baggie of free chaeto from a fellow , local hobbyist & a package of pods from Podyourreef.

Livestock we currently have:

Powder Brown Tang
Foxface
Mandarin
Firefish
Engineer Goby
Cleaner Shrimp
And a clean up crew (tons of snails & crabs)

8 weeks into the move and no true cycle has happened. Water quality is great. I'm guessing the non existant cycle was due to the large amount of cycled live rock.

Have you looked at the AquaForest reef tank?! That's my favorite part of this salt! No really... It's awesome salt that promotes a healthy reef tank with solid parameters. The micro and macronutrients are a great addition. I just started a 350 and am using this salt. Good stuff!

It’s a great idea and it looks great, but honestly I worry a little about it. A full 90G tank weighs close to 1000 pounds and I’m not sure the piano was designed to support that weight. Did you do anything to strengthen it before putting the tank on top of it?

Very cool and creative!!

Was wondering about this as well. Im our part of the country, you can’t even give a piano away! Mine included. No one wants one anymore! Believe me, I see them free on every online market I subscribe to. That would be really cool to repurpose ours but I also have questions about the load bearing capabilities, though the thing is too heavy to pick up.

Very unique idea. I also was concerned with the weight. I am sure that each piano frame is different also. Good luck with your build. You may just have started something new. Cheers!

That’s awesome!

Hmm spend money on piano lessons, or turn the piano into a reef... ;)

You made a good choice!
Mind you I'd be Mozart by now if I'd spent everything I had on reefing and put it purely into piano lessons
