I’m not sure if I’m over thinking this or what. Is there a way to do a refugium outside of a sump or is that essentially what an algea scrubber is for?
My issue is my sump is super small on my 90 gallon Prostar, they made the sections so small. In-line is to a filter sock area, the. To a 8x8 section for skimmer and then another 8x8 for the return. Is there a way to make one work? I can’t put anything above the sump as there is space limitations.

There are macroalgae reactors and algae scrubbers, but I don't think there is an easy way to have a refugium otherwise unless you remove the skimmer (my refugium is where the skimmer would normally be).

You can divert incoming water, or pump, to a bucket or whatever you can use and allow that refugium container to gravity feed through a pipe back to your sump. Years back I've done this and put a slot in the pipe for a turf scrubbing screen which fed into a 20g Rubbermaid tub which drained back into the socks.

Gate valves for finer control of course.

Yes, several hob refugium options available for purchase or you could easily make your own - youtube vids.

Do you have space to the side? Where are you planning to put it? Lifereef makes stand alone refugiums. You pump water into it and then gravity drain back to the sump.
