7 fish have been in qt for the new tank.

At day 15 the blue tang broke out. The rest of the fish are fine and everyone is eating aggressively.

Copper is measure with Hanna. I am using copper power at 2.5 ppm.

The blue tang seems to be the only one impacted.

Does anyone have experience dealing with an outbreak like this after two weeks into the QT period? I assume the qt period resets to 0.

Copper is maintained at 2.5ppm with an ATO.

Pictures of the blue tang and clean powder tang for reference.

With copper power which is chelated, you don’t need to go as high as regular copper and you must dose according to package recommendations
With your treatment, there should be no outbreak and makes me wonder the accuracy of your level.
I have a meeting in 5 mins but let’s see what @Jay Hemdal thinks

Yes, I always reset my quarantine counter if there was uncontrolled parasites at some point, or if I added new fish to the QT.

Are you positive it is ich? Working from photos is tough, but it seems that some of the spots are not regular in shape. Plus, the PBT looks clean, and that would be surprising to me.
Sounds like you are running copper spot on. I usually see copper fail two ways; when not tested and dosed properly and sometimes it is slow to control active disease when first used. Relapses are much less common.

That’s why I included the PBT. All the other fish in the QT are healthy and show no signs.

I’m not positive it is ich. I would assume atleast one other fish would of shown signs, and the powder blue being the most likely of them all.

I’ve read elsewhere that hippo tangs have shown signs similar to what I am seeing in copper. Hard to determine the accuracy and conditions of those comments. My feeling is that this is something else, which is why I am curious about other people’s experiences.

The spots appear to resemble ich, like you said, but I thought the same thing you did, which was something seemed different about them.

I worry about keeping all those fish in 2.5 ppm copper for 45 days, but will if I have to.

Yes, hepatus tangs sometimes develop mucus plugs in response to copper. Trouble is, these spots seem too s

I’ve not run copper power for 45 days, but it is similar to coppersafe, and I’ve run that in tanks continuously with no issues. At the very least, go 14 days beyond when the symptoms were last seen.
