I have a 265 reef I’ve had for almost 20 years. I have used the CPR overflow and just replaced the aqua lifters every year or so. Now it looks like that no longer making that product any suggestions.
1. I’m currently using a powered head to pull a vacuum on the CPR overflow but it puts too much air bubbles in the display.

2. I’m very scared about drilling a hole in my tank.

3. I’m open to any ideas

Have you talked to CPR? It looks to me lie they are still making overflows - you could try to replace yours?

Drill the tank. You will be glad you did and feel silly for have waited so long. Speaking from experience.
Ps I assumed that drilling would involve emptying etc. if you can do that do that. If you can’t most aquarium maintenance companies can. But - AFAIK - CPR still makes overflows - if you like them - buy a new one. I personally would NOT drill the tank - unless its empty - and if something happens - you don't need 'the tank'. I would not drain and drill a tank and then see what happens. JMHO.

265 reef fully stocked, 20 years old.
I can’t see Nana brand new CPR overflow once a year just to buy the vacuum.

You can drill it by just lower the water level below the place you want the hole. I did it on a 15 gallon tank which has much thinner glass than yours. Thick glass is easier.

Whoa! How have I not thought to do this? I have an evo 13.5 I want to attach to a sump. I have very limited room but would love the extra water volume. How high/low did you put your hole?

I set the hole in relation to the template that came with the box. For the in tube I drilled it about and two inches below the lip .

Buy an overflow that does not require the vacum. There are a ton out there. Also if your return chamber is limited in the volume of water and your display tank is not filled up all the way, you shouldn’t worry about an overflow. The return pump chamber should run out of water before the tank overflows. Just do some simple volume calculations. These hang on overflow boxes are just as safe as reef ready tanks. The only down side is you can’t push your tank all the way against the all.
