i over fed my tank whilst i was testing out my new automatic feeder for a vacation i’m going on and it dispensed so much food before i could scoop it out, i siphoned most of it out but there’s still a lot left will this cause a huge ammonia spike? i don’t have enough RODI water for my tank to do a water change but i could empty the tank half way and move the heater and powerhead down so the fish still get oxygen and heat but i don’t know what to do

Have you got a net to try and collect some more food?

Relax.

I did the SAME thing when I got my first auto feeder. (guess it helps to read the instructions fully right?) haha..

I basically fed the tank 3 times as much as I thought I was feeding every time it dosed..

I took out what I could with a net and left the rest. What didn't get eaten did what it did... The bottom line here though is that it DID NOT nuke my tank!!

Was there an ammonia spike? I have no idea as I don't now and never have tested for ammonia. Did my tank survive? Absolutely!

I wouldn't worry too much over this issue.

Maybe step up your water change schedule for the next couple weeks to remove any buildup, but otherwise you will be fine.

Oh yeah, it would help a bit to clean your mechanical filtration... Getting rid of whatever is in there now, will give you more freedom of movement as the food you can't remove begins to break down. No reason to have 2 sources of decaying particles..

What size is your tank?

If got a sump could siphon up the pellets and send water back in sump but have a net to collect all the pellets at end of tube.
Or more tedious way could use turkey baster and suck up pellets then squirt the pellets/water in Turkey baster back in tank but through a net so catches the pellets.
Ovbiously you going siphon up little sand also but if hover over the pellets should just get pellets and only little sand.

Goodluck
