If you have heavy import of some form of nitrogen (heavy feeding for example), then no you don't need to. This is how I run my tank with around 0-2ppm nitrate)

If you do dose, I would go with aminos over nitrate.

Aminos seem to be something that all corals can use and doesn't produce much waste in a tank from my experience. I think it is preferable to corals over nitrate. I use reef energy currently (its not 100% aminos as it has other stuff), but I also like vitachem.
