im drilling and plumbing my tank today for a bean animal. I am running my drains in 1" and returns in 3/4.

It's a 40 breeder DT and a 29 sump.
I've come upon 2 problems.

1: As far I can tell, no one makes a 1" sanitary T, so I was planning on making one out of a 45 Y and another 45.
My question is should I bush my open channel to 1 1/4 to ensure the cascade effect, or will 1" be sufficient?

Other problem, I feel like I'd rather run a single 3/4 return line. Anyone foresee an complications with this? I'm planning on using one of the smaller jebao pumps.

Any input, advice or constructive criticism is greatly appreciated. :)

Can't answer your first question but I run a single 3/4 on my 75 display and 29 sump with a syncra 3.0 that feeds a 3/4 locline that was running one flared end which ran fine but switched to a y and two flared ends so I could aim some flow to some dead spots. It's also a bean animal running 1in and I have my gate valve choked down and it still flows a ton of water.

Forgot to mention running the smaller jeabo with the extra plumbing to run two returns may add to much head pressure and reduce your flow a lot.

That's awesome! I really didn't want to have to run two 3/4 returns anyway. Thank you very much for you input.
Did you run your open channel drain line in 1 inch as well? Was it enough to allow the water the cascade down the pipe properly?

Thanks again!

Yes I ran 1in on my siphon open and emergency pipe. Both open and emergency run fine if either or both siphon and open clog

A sanitary tee is meant for DWV (drain waste vent) plumbing, so the smallest you will generally find is in 1 ½". A regular tee will work just fine.

I would increase the size of the open channel. The open channel essentially acts like a Durso standpipe, and the amount of water it can carry before it starts to gurgle (and thus the 'bandwidth,' or range of flow that the system can handle silently) decreases exponentially with pipe diameter, so increasing from 1" to 1 ½" will make a significant difference.

Whether ¾" return plumbing will be adequate depends on your pump and desired flow. Resistance to flow increases exponentially with decreasing pipe diameter, and ¾" starts to get pretty small, but a 40b isn't that big, so it may be fine. PVC is cheap and it's not that much work to do the return line, so I'd go ahead and try it. If you're happy with the flow, great. If you want more, increase the pipe to 1"

Are you drilling for the return or coming over the top? If you're drilling for the return then I'd make a quick ¾" return that goes over the top and test it before drilling the tank to see if it suffices.

I'm a plumber, I know that I can't find a pvc SAN tee which is why I was planning on making one out of 45 wye's and additional 45. I've got less than 4' of head loss and not but a couple 45's.

I drilled a 3/4 return, will be running on 3' 8" and 1) 90, 2) 45's.

Reef octo varios-2. All has plenty of flow. Open channel is run in 1".

All tested this morning and properly, silently and reliably functioning.
