I currently have a 90g tank that was previously a freshwater tank. I converted to salt water about a year ago and have had a FOWLR setup. I am wanting to put a reef in this tank but it can't be drilled.

I am curious as to what the best solution would be to create an overflow with a sump. I have read that the HOB overflows are not recommended due to flooding issues and such. Is there anyway to help offset this?

On the HOB, the feeder tube would be roughly 1/2" below water which would mean that all that would be pulled in event of power failure is about 3 gallons. On the return line if I drill 4 1/8" holes in the pipe then it should prevent back siphoning.

Then all i need to do is to install a cutoff on the return pump if the water level in the sump chamber were to get to a certain level.

Would this be sufficient or do you have other recommendations? i am open to all suggestions. TIA for any help

I run solely hob no drilled tanks ATM . I've never had an issue with overflow. Just make sure ur sump can handle what flows back down when the powers cut.

I am looking at the ESHOPPS PF-800 for a 90g tank. Would a 20g tank be sufficient for a sump?

I think it would b sufficient. Make sure your siphon break holes are right at the surface that'll insure minimal water going back down.I have a 35 running for the 120 and a 10 gallon for the 30.
