You can probably use a coupling. Say the existing pipe is 1" get a 1" coupling. This will extend the pipe like you wanted and allow the strainer to be inserted again.

Ekemat, cut to full size of your overflow. Just lay it flat

id prefer not to lift the pipe any higher though, i dont want it to start coming over the teeth on my overflow box, then it will be real easy for a fish to slide on in there. i wanna try and get something like a flexible screen, to just cover the hole.
