Overflow box GPH advice.

Hello everyone,

I’m in the process of planning my first tank and I’m going to get a Fiji Cube overflow box however I’m unsure which size to get.

I have a 50g tank with a 30g sump. I read somewhere you should choose a overflow box that can handle 10x the aquarium size so 500GPH. But do I also take into account the sump when doing this calculation? If so, would I choose a box that can handle 800GPH based on 80g which includes the sump? hope I’ve explained that ok.

With rock, sand, heaters, pumps, etc, you'll more then likely only have around 65G total. I think the 500GPH would be fine.

The 10X rule isn’t really accurate. You just need enough turn over to keep the water temperature and chemistry the same between the sump and display. 3-5X may be enough. It’s mostly a matter of what’s available.

Would it be bad if I would be running a 1600 gph on a 75g with a 20g sump?!! ;Woot go big or go home!

well the tank is at home though...soooo......

I think 500 gph will be fine...
