Does anyone have any opinions on over flow placement width (left, right back etc)? When I set up my tank I drilled my own and placed the box on the back left hand side. After a few months watching the flow move around my tank I can't help think there is definitely a better location and size. Preferably it would skim not only from the top but mid water column as well. Don't get me wrong my sump socks catch a ton but there always seems to be "garbage" mostly sand/detritus floating around for a while before it goes down the overflow. Thoughts?

What size tank are we working with? :) I generally do the same thing, have the overflow box on the left hand side of the tank and my return on the right hand side pointing towards the front opposite corner :)

40 breeder. I was wondering if it would make any difference. If I could do it again I might center the box on the back then split the return to each end. My original goal was to hide both the box and return as much as possible.
But one of those large shadow boxes tuned way down might be nicer looking and with the second drain line and emergency might not have the tuning issues I have sometimes?

Mine is the 40 breeder as well, I went with the Eclipse S overflow, on the left hand side and return on the right hand side, and plumbed it herbie style. no issues yet lol but the shadow box would be a good choice as well and tune it down :)

what do you guys mean by "tune it down"? Im in the process of setting up my 40b and I'm looking at overflows and plumbing options right now.

get a gate valve and tune for full siphon

they are more expensive than what I bought but the eclipse overflows are WAY smaller in tank profile and they have already the external measurements done which would help avoid the issues I'm currently having aka ~1" difference between the top of my main drain and my emergency. So the act of replacing filter socks can potentially affect the full siphon.

there may be better places to buy
