My Modular Marine overflow box has limited space. Below are two plumbing options I came up with thus far. Is one better than the other? Both equally bad, or good?

If you have any ideas, or thoughts, please share.

#1
Full siphon - low profile strainer.
Open channel and E-drain - standpipes.

#2
Full siphon - strainer
Open channel - 90 deg elbow, slip/spigot street 90, and pvc pipe
E-drain - standpipe

Thanks for the input. I’ve read both of those articles on multiple occasions yet I’m still uncertain about which of the two options I posted would be best.

Gmac reef barely touches on BA in that particular article as well as others. Impatiently waiting for them to right an in-depth article about BA like the Herbie one. Taking forever.

The descriptions on the beananimal site are just too specific and detailed to apply to my simple variations, at least as far as I could tell.

Thanks again!

So let's break down the differences in your two options.TThe second has a U tube and a lower profile grate? The U tube serves to quiet the overflow on the mostly empty stand pipe. Am I missing anything else?

If that's the difference, I'm not sure why you wouldn't use the U tube. Although I think you have to drill it with an airline tubing sized hole and needle valve.

I have a MM overflow as well and this has been driving me nuts —- especially don’t want the emergency drain in the middle. Would #1 have. Noise issues? Could you tell the length of the tubes as well? I have the 1600 GOH overflow

Number one would have noise, theoretically number two would not if you were to add an airline tubing and valve.

plumb both ways and see which one is quieter and has the most flow. Ideally you want the water level in the outer box to be at least level with your through bulkheads to keep the noise down. How big is the tank and what size pump are you planning to run. I actually test fit my plumbing into a 5 gallon bucket and was able to tune the gate valve with no issue. Who ever designed that bulkhead placement gave you no space to put anything. You might also consider trimming your through bulkheads if that gives anymore room.

IF YOU HAD TO TAKE A REEFING EXAM, WOULD YOU PASS?
