I’m in the process of making my old Jbj 24 into a very custom frag tank. It was already converted into a rimless tank. I have a sump and expanded my stand. I am going to also remove all of the aio components. What would you guys recommend for an overflow box? I’m trying to keep the cost down as much as I can. I see marine depot sells an elite series overflow box with a drill bit for $75. Should I go this route? Or should I get one of the ones that eshopps makes that siphons? I’ve never really installed overflow boxes. What would be the best way to go?

I've been using the Eshopps for many years and it has never failed me in any way.
I would stay away from the CPR brand.

I used to use the siphon box on my old tank for a number of years with no real complaints. The only thing I could complain about was the shadow the internal box caused. If I had the choice I would go with an external overflow box for a tank that size and drill the tank.

I would recommend drilling. However, I have also had an Eshopps hob overflow that has never failed me (knock on wood). Mine is slightly modified I removed the internal filter and added a second drain line. I would have preferred drilling but the tank was already running when I decided to add a sump so I didnt have that option.

Drill it, get a glue in weir and use the eshopps eclipse. Or make your own like I did...

I would do the eshopps eclipse S personally. Comes with drillbit, inside box and outside box that you can setup herbie style so you never have to worry about overflowing due to clogged primary drain or it loosing siphon :)

I agree with everyone about drilling. But what box? The one like the Marine Depot/eshopps eclipse clone or the one on amazon?
If you get the one on amazon that is posted you will need to build an external box or run the pipes internal. Either way you would need to do some sort fabrication unless you dont care about drain noise. I personally prefer a silent drain I dont mind the sounds of pumps and whatnot but I hate sucking and gurgling drains (my tank is in my bedroom so that also has something to do with this). If you wanted something that (can be) silent and is essentially complete I would go with the eclipse or clone.

Thank you! This is what I was wondering. I saw some people just put a simple bulkhead and plumb that down to the sump with the Amazon one. I’ll probably go with the eclipse style one because it is going in the living room and the wife would be pretty mad if her “tranquil” living room sounded like a public bathroom LOL

Yeah, I got one of those types of overflow boxes for my 40B but I built an external box to accommodate a bean animal style drain. I like my tanks to be mostly silent. Eventually when I have a fish room I dont mind if there is water noise in there but I like my main DT in living spaces to be as quiet as possibly. Especially because my GF hates water noise.

Would it be worth converting it to have a sump though? It’s just going to be for zoas and nems....
When I first started my first tank it didnt have a sump after having one I dont think I would have a tank without one. You dont NEED one but it hides equipment and gives you extra water volume for extra stability. I also like to use it during water changes so the new salt water mixes in more slowly. I also have a fuge in mine.

The DT is a jbj45 aio because I don’t have room for a sump with that one. The frag tank has plenty of space. Sumps just help with equipment management so much...

One thing I forgot is salinity stability because generally the return section of the sump (where you would put your auto top off) has a much smaller surface area then the display the ATO would turn on more frequently and add less fresh water giving you more stable salinity.
