I am going back and forth between the Modular Marine Overflow Box and the Eshopps Eclipse Overflow Box.

I will use the overflow box for a 10 gallon frag tank plumbed to my display but plan to reuse the overflow box for a future build - a 40 gallon breeder (36 x 18 x 16), 34 gallon (36 x 18 x 12), or 80 gallon (48 x 24 x 16).

I prefer the Modular Marine Overflow Box because of the slimmer skimmer box. My only concern is the hole sizings. The sizings are smaller than what I typically see. For example, let's say I were to build a 40 gallon tank with a 20 gallon sump. I would likely select the 800gph Modular Marine model or the Eshopps Eclipse M. The Eshopps overflow box has a single 1.5" hole that brings water to the outer box which has two 1" drains. On the other hand, the Modular Marine model has two 1" holes that bring water to the outer box which has three 1/2" drains. The numerous build threads for a 40 gallon tank seem to utilize 1" drains and 3/4" return lines. Would the smaller Modular Marine drain sizes be a problem?

As for the Eshopps Eclipse, the S and M models have only one 1.5" hole that leads to the outer box. I'd guess that the chance of clogging are almost nonexistent but if a 1" herbie drain can get clogged, couldn't that 1.5" hole get clogged too?

Lastly, is there such a thing as too big? I may just go with the Eshopps Eclipse L model since it utilizes 1" drains and has two holes that lead to the outer box. I'll just live with the bigger profile and find a workaround for the water line.

Modular marine is pretty good to deal with. Im sure if you ask he will give you bigger drain holes for a low cost if not free. Unless it cant physically be done or messes up the overflow from engineering point of view. Id email and ask.

I am deciding between Exotic Marine and Modular Marine now. Those seem to be the most popular. Cost is pretty much the same after shipping an all....

I'm still trying to figure out if there is such a thing as too big of an overflow (e.g. 1600gph overflow on a 40 gallon).

Does anyone know how much water gets drained on the Exotic Marine overflows during outages on a 40B? It's supposedly less due to the horizontal slots but I'm trying to see how much my sump can accomodate.

Other than that, I think the only difference is the removable box for cleaning and the slots?
