Okay so I got my new 40 yesterday and I'm planning my plumbing design. (This is my first reef tank) I have read that acrylic does not bond well to glass. I have noticed that the vast majority of boxes have 3 walls. I have found a few with 4 walls and to my way of thinking this is a more permanent solution if eventually the 3 walled box is going to come off. So my question is should I go with a 4 walled box? Is there any reason why a 4 walled box is not a good option? I'm going to be drilling the tank myself and using the "herbie" overflow method. Thanks!

I would go with a full skimmer box (4 walls) attached via pass-through bulkheads securing it more effectively to the aquarium as opposed to siliconing it. Is that what you are planning or are you thinking of attaching it some other way?

love the bean, but not the amount of consumed space the "over-flow" takes over...

I do'nt like the Herbie, set up leaves a bit to be desired. That and the Bean can be done inside or outisde the tank.

Yeah, I was leaning toward doing the 4 wall box and attaching with the bulkheads and an extra gasket between the box and glass. I was just curious why this doesn't seem to be the preferred method I guess, it seems the 3 walled is more common. To me it seems the 4 wall is superior but I wasn't sure if I was missing something.

Is that the bean Reefing Madness? What is the 3rd standpipe and what is the tubing coming off the top? How is the bean method superior in your opinion?

DIY combo...

The third pipe is the emergency pipe, incase something happens to the other 2.
In my eye, I like the BeanAnimal system much better than the Herbie.

Ok thanks guys looks like I'll be doing some more research in considering the bean animal method. Any more thoughts on 3 walled vs 4 walled overflow boxes?

Thanks, seems like the ticket to me too. After doing quite a bit of research I think I will use the bean animal method, seems like the most solid method
