Ever few minutes I get a loud gurgle/bubbles from my overflow into the sump. I tried to make an air escape route with a T but the water and bubbles would come out of the pipe and splash all over the sump I have my return pump throttled down a good bit or it will outrun the overflow. I tried the airline into the durso that didn't really help the bubble gurgle it only happens ever few minutes but it's violent enough it causes salt creep around the top of the sump. Any ideas? Spray bar maybe? I dunno getting annoying though lol

What is your drain style? Durso stand pipe? Can we see some pictures of the inside of the overflow box or some pics from the back of tank? Not clear how the water travels to the sump yet

Too much flow is still your problem.

You only need between two times the display volume and four times the display volume in actual gallons per hour to satisfy your protein skimmer and other sump devices. More flow than this generally does cause issues with bubbles and gurgling.

Try using a bucket or some other vessel of known volume to measure the flow from one of your drains or from one of your returns (you will actually have to measure all of your drains and all of your returns if there are more than one oak) and see what your actual flow rate is.

Yep sure I I'll get a photo after dinner in a few if I cut the flow down anymore it will almost stop lol guess my pump is too big I didn't buy it it's what they had with the system when I bought it

Look into too much flow as stated above. Also it looks like the drain is pretty far under the water. This may be causing some of the issue as well. Try putting it about an inch under the water and see if it helps any.

It originally was just under the surface then I missed the pipe to add the T to try to stop the gurgle didn't work lol finishing my margarita will get some pics in bout 5 min please check back

Pryorites, I like that

I put a gate valve in my overflow line and that stopped the issue for myself. I also have a stint of .25 a acrylic tubing that is in the strainer in the down side of the overflow the allows the the overflow line to the sump to breath so there is not the slurp.

You can also controll the speed of your drain by metering the suction at the overflow. I'm a fan of Durso style drains because airline can be inserted into the fitting and that controls your suction.

Ok here we go
The pump must be too fast it's a quiet one 2200 or something like that I only have 1 overflow although it is drilled for more but I only have one standpipe but honestly don't really know how to "tune" the durso just left it where it was when I got the tank used. I added baffles to the 30 gal sump to add a refuge that may be the problem shoot I dunno lol no way to get the sump out without tearing out the side of the stand so yeah that's not gonna happen lol any advice? The ball valve is almost closed as you can see much more and it won't hardly give flow

OK, what is the water level in the over flow box? Is is lower than the water level in the DT?

Without seeing the thing in action, my guesstimate is the air tube is touching water acting like a seal.....like the hole is not there

Yes lower than the display I pulled the tube out only bout 2 inches in it now not touching the water inside the drain still gurgled. would hard plumbing the return with a Y back to the Overflow chamber of the sump help? that would allow me to run the return faster or should I maybe set up a second drain I don't have another sure I and don't think 2 would fit but I could make one I guess out of pic just trying to find a spimple fix :-) thanx for your help :-)

Adding the second overflow is a good idea. It will help with the gurgle if to much flow is the issue but even if it dont help the gurgle (which it should some) then it will at least give you a back up overflow should anything get stuck in the pipe you have now.

If you have an airline adjustable valve you can do some fine tuning. Also, I keep airline very deep in the drain. About 10" and can adjust the syphon by pulling airline up or feeding deeper.

"Ever few minutes I get a loud gurgle/bubbles" You need to find out why the gurgle comes and goes. I had continuous gurble noise, not every few minutes like your case. The way you describe it, it is like something builds up and then releases......cover the vent hole of top of the durso and you see what I meant....The water will raise up but then since the drain pipe is empty, the water will rush down.....causing the toilet flush noise.

I had durso top before and it had the noise of the water splashing down...I replaced the top part with a Maggie muffler and the noise is gone 90%

If that's a QuietOne 2200 and it's already throttled back, I don't think too much flow is likely to be your issue.

Most basic drains handle a peak of about 600 gph - I think based on the 1" PVC that actually handles the draining.

From what I can tell, you can't be getting more than around 400 GPH unless your tank and stand are freakishly low to the ground.

Plus, I see you have that ball valve cocked way back already, so that would be (400 GPH * x%).

Not that noise is impossible at that level of flow, but you still have to account for the effects of your plumbing on head loss, so actual flow will be even less than 400 * x%.

That said, I still think measuring your actual flow rate is worthwhile.....if you still have room to throttle back the flow, do it. It'll potentially save you from all this mucking around with Maggie and Durso. ;)

(My drain boxes came with Maggie's....which now sit in a drawer.)
