Hey folks,

In my last aquarium I had a HOB overflow, so I'm VERY familiar with the "get the siphon going" technique and the heart pounding that accompanies it. However, my new aquarium is reef ready and I bought a Megaflo overflow kit. It's fully assembled with no leaking, etc. My question is: Do I simply fill the DT overflow section, and also the sump, and turn on the return pump then gravity does the rest???? No sucking water through the over flow? lol. Also, where has everyone drilled there Anti-Siphon hole? Or would putting the return nozzles JUST below the water level for surface agitation sufice for the siphon break. My sump is a DIY 20L. I placed the baffles a few inches below the lip of the tank so when siphoned back the tank will (hopefully) be able hold the volume. I've read that people have installed check valves, but I'm in the pool business and I'm familiar with their failure rate. TIA

Yes, you do not have to start the siphon, it will start on its own.

What size tank?

All 3 of my tanks have 20 long sumps.

The hardest part is going to figure out the proper water level for your sump. I would fill your tank up to just before the overflow part. Fill the sump up to about 3/4 full, and plug in the main pump. If the main pump doesn't start sucking in air, but is very close to it, this would be your min water level. Add more water to the sump, and turn off the main pump (( and skimmer )) and see how close the water is to the top. If the water is right at the top (( without overflowing )) this is your max fill level.

I personally don't trust anti-siphon holes, they will get clogged. Better to have the return lines near the water surface like you mentioned.

I agree not to trust one anti-siphon hole. Each of my two overflow pipes has two. One opposite the other just below the waterline.
Good luck!
