I inherited a tank with a bunch of problems, one of the problems is I think the overflow basket is too high. There isn't much space between the top of the basket and the lid of the tank. I knocked down the water return and opened up the overflow up all the way so I don't get the crazy salt creep on the lid I used to but it's loud as hell now. Is there a recommended air gap that should be at the top of the tank or does it not matter? And are there any solutions to maybe switch out the overflow basket since the wholes already in the tank?

I think there are too many variables to have a standard gap between the top of the overflow and the lid.

The 'loud' is probably due to the water falling too far. If you can decrease that distance, it will quiet down.

I would definitely prefer cleaning salt creep over 'loud'.
