On my newly setup deep blue 80... where the water falls into the overflow is crazy loud.... so loud I had to turn off the sump for bed haha...

Plumbing is pretty quiet, skimmer and return pump as well... it's just the splashing of the water falling over the overflow...

I have the grate as low as i can and still maintain a full display... the drain pipe has very little room to be taller, return pump is slow as i can put it...etc...

I need suggestions to quiet this thing... thanks

It's really not the pipes at all... it's the water falling into the overflow box...I assume I need to raise the water level back there... i am guessing a ball valve to slow my return pump down might do the trick... going to try that...

The issue is there are two thumb screws back there that break the fall of the water..causing it to splash down instead of fall down wall

Sorry, it's running a durso now... it's about as high as it can go without the pipe sticking up

You need a valve on the main drain line to slow it so you raise the level of water in the oveflow box to stop the waterfall effect. A gate valve works best because you can fine tune it better than a ball valve.

On the drain or the return? I was told to put one on the return line

I always thought that a valve on drain was risky business due to increased potential to clog

That's why you need a second emergency drain. If you put the valve on the return line and restricted it that's going to be less water going into the overflow and causing even more noise.

Can you show a picture of what you got back there? The top end cap on a durso is supposed to be above the water. Water level should be at or just above the tee, this is adjusted with an air valve or gradually making the proper size air intake hole on top of the durso cap. Pictured below is a version of durso without the Tee, made out of 2 PVC end caps. The bottom end cap has some precise slots cut into it to fit over 1"PVC pipe. I bought this one, and it works like a charm, very quiet! The hose on top goes to an air valve to adjust the water level. Hope this helps!

Again it has nothing at all to do with the plumbing... it's the water hitting the two thumb screws and making a splashing sound when it falls into the overflow box..m

It's right outside the bedroom door in the dinning room entrance way....

You need to raise the water in the overflow to stop the splashing. Raise the pipes up a little. There is really no other option as slowing down the return will not affect the overflow height much.

Vinyl I hope,Thumbscrews in overflow box, why are they there, to adjust the water level in main display? A picture when possible would help.

In my overflow box, I have a durso drain between two return standpipes. The water falling into the box was loud and I was able to use a large piece of coarse foam to break the fall and quite the noise. I was able to position the foam such that there was no danger of blocking the durso, and could be removed easily.

They are on the deep blue grate that adjusts the overflow height... it's a brand new tank, yes plastic screws..

Slowing down the return pump wouldn't raise the level in the overflow?
