Most overflows and interior drains are built on 1" plumbing and will pretty much share performance qualities.
If you make the drain plumbing larger (even if doing so requires an adapter) it can help. In general, no matter the size of the drain, exceeding 50% of the drain's rated flow will lead to noise, excessive air-mixing and possibly other issues. For something like 1200gph (enough flow to drive the filtration for a tank between 300 and 600 gallons...a waste on a smaller tank) you'd either want something like a Herbie drain that uses multiple drain pipes, or you'd want a significantly larger diameter for your drain pipe.
