Overflow not siphoning properly. I’m lost.

Hi All,

having issues with my overflow in 120g. It’s gurgling a lot and shooting water into the sump. So I’m dealing with noise issues up top and spray down below. Today was the first time I’ve fired it up, so any help would be great.

I can't really help here. It has been a long time since I used a Durso standpipe. Hopefully someone will chime in that can help you tune it.
 
Is the noise constant or periodic? What size return pump do you have? How deeply submerged is the drain line into the sump?

The noise is pretty constant. The return pump is a lifegard quiet one 4000. It’s 1022 GPH, but probably closer to 650-700 GPH considering head height. The return line is ~1” - 2” into the sump (below the water line).
 
Ok, I did solve this pretty simply. I reduced the flow on my return pump, but I had to turn it to it’s lowest setting. I’m surprised, because it’s not like it’s a way over powered pump.
 
I haven't worked with a durso but I have worked with a bean animal ... in which the secondary pipe is much like the primary pipe in your durso (e.g. the one with the little tube sticking out the top).

It sound like your return pump was feeding water to the DT ... and therefore into your overflow chamber ... fast enough for the main durso pipe to form a near-siphon. And the little tube in the top was too small to allow enough air to be pulled in to prevent a siphon.

The short story: a larger diameter tube in the top of your durso should allow you to run your return pump a little bit faster without turning your sump into a hot tub.

The longer story, here's what was most likely happening:

Since that little tube on top of the pipe wasn't allowing enough air in, your primary pipe was fluctuating back and forth between siphon/not-siphon ... and the while the little tube was letting in just enough air to make the near siphon frothy and full of bubbles.

The result: gurgling noises as it tried to suck air into the siphon ... and yet enough turbulent, froth water rapidly flowing down your main durso pipe to create a frothy hot-tub-jet-effect in your sump.

When you dialed you return pump down to its lowest setting, the flow in the pipe slowed enough for the little tube to be able to draw enough air in to prevent a siphon from being near to forming.

If you want more turnover from your DT to your sump -- e.g. to turn up your return pump a bit -- you'll need a larger diameter tube on the top of your durso pipe so that it can draw in more air quicker. This will let more water flow through before a siphon starts to form.

But it will still mean slightly louder gurgling noise. Some gurgling is unavoidable without either a full siphon, which has no air being draw into which means no gurgle ... or with a very slow flow down through the drain pipe, which allows the air and the smaller volume of water to both occupy the pipe without trying to mix.

Also, instead of making the hole bigger, can I add a second hole next to it with a tube?

I tried this with mine and it made it erratic. Is everything glued down completely already? I found the best thing to do was angle the 90 that draws in the water at a 45 degree and move the air vent completely up to where it was just inside the PVC. There was less vacuum at that point, and air trapped in the tube could escape without the large 'purge' of water.

Yes, I’m already glued in at this point. I’ll probably just pull the existing tube and drill that hole to about 1/2”
 
So here’s where I’m at now...I drilled the hole in the top to 1/2”. This helped immensely as I can set the pump to whatever level without it trying to suck air through the siphon break. However, the water still shoots into the sump (1.5” below the water line) at an intense rate. It sounds like the aforementioned hot tub. So I don’t mind the noise it makes, it’s not that bad. But I am concerned with salt creep as the bubbling does create some splashes.

If your drain is pushing out bubbles, it isn’t siphoning and most likely your secondary drain is handling the bulk of the flow. Since it has a hole on top for the airline tube, it’s able to pull air into the drain, hence the “hottub” effect. How I remedy this and put the flow where it should be is to remove the durso altogether from the primary drain. It’s unnecessary. The problem with running durso on the primary full-siphon is that the water level in the dry-side of the overflow box needs to be high enough to create a pressure differential that’s great enough to force the trapped air bubbles in the tube out of the bottom and into the sump. By removing that durso, you lower the necessary water level to get the siphon started efficiently. That’ll fix most of your problem. Tuning should be a matter of closing the primary drain’s ball valve until the water level in the dry-side overflow very slowly creeps up to where the secondary drain starts functioning. Technically, you don’t even need a ball valve for the secondary drain, but I use one and ever-so-slightly close it just to reduce noise more than anything.

your main drain the one with the two 90 on top is supposed to be under water about half way down the overflow with a gate valve on it.
second pipe should have two 90s on it at the level you want water in overflow, i suggest up near the top because water going into overflow makes noise in itself.
doesn't look like you have another hole for a emergency drain.
you adjust gate valve to where bubbles stop coming out main drain or you can tweak it a bit allowing some bubbles but not enough to make much noise and the other pipe will automatically set the level in you overflow and handle the rest of the flow.
i have 1500 gallons a hour going thru mine and its whisper quiet.
