Overflow or OverFlowssss?

1 over flow, or ?

  • 1 is enough for me

  • 2 isn't necessary, but preferred

  • 2 is the way to go if you can afford it

  • I don't use a sump for filtration.

I am debating 2 corner overflows for my 72" 125g rather than 1 across the middle...

1 is obviously cost effective, less maintenance, and less plumbing.

2 is more efficient, better turnover % of water column, and perhaps safer considering the Primary/backup concept..

What's your preference .... and why?

I'm following this thread since I'm wondering the same thing. The only feedback I've gotten so far was to stick with one since balancing two tends to be problematic. Even in a unique tank like the one I'm setting up.

You can see below that I have essentially 2 25-gallon tanks connected by 2 tubes in the center. This means I have 2 separate surfaces to strain and keep clean. That said, even in this situation I've been advised to only keep 1 overflow for balancing reasons.

The option I would pick is not there .....

One overflow/drain box is always preferred chez moi over multiples as long as the skim box is of adequate size and the drains can handle desired flow. I put up with dual corner overflows for years before finally going with a single ghost-style on my current tank. So much better.

This^^^! The ghost style (single external overflow) is the way to go, for so many reasons. I know there are a few that will say it takes up too much space behind the tank, or that it is a pain to work on back there. But I have to tell you that the ghost-style external is the only way I will go on anything else I build.

My friend who has 11 tanks said I'm asking for problems with dual...

Maybe I'll just put a big single in the center... idk..
