I have a 20g tall sump I'm building for a 40g breeder. If the overflow section of the sump will be 8" high, how far below the water level should the overflow drain be? I've ordered a filter sock/holder and am also wondering about the length of sock i should get. Any thoughts?

best to have the drain right below the water line. if you have the drain above, you'll hear water splashing. too far below, you'll hear a lot more bubble gurgling

Same here.

I agree, right below the surface. Especially if it is a full siphon. They can be impossible to start up if they are too low below the surface.
It's not a syphon. The tank is drilled. But i take it the depth is the same???

My drain is vinyl reinforced tubing and lays right on the bottom . The tank is bottom drilled so from the bulkhead it drops vertically then makes a nice gradual sweep or 90 degree bend so it lays on the sump bottom. It discharges close to the skimmers intake so gets processed quickly.

My drains go about 9" under the waters surface in the sump, which is a little more than half way.

I tried to fix mine from gurgling with a t fitting that has a pipe going up out of the water to let air out sadly it did not work and now every few minutes I get a huge gurgle anyone know how to fix that?
