I have an 8 foot long 300 aquarium with a single over flow with 1.5" drain . The Over flow is custom aquariums H2O over flow and states it maxs at 1200 gph. This is the link to the overflow and what it looks like https://www.customaquariums.com/information/h2overflow.html. As you can see there is no internal overflow box , which would probably give me options. I need a better filtration than the 1200 gph that this overflow is rated for. Id like an 8-10 x turn over rate. Additional problems- There is a background silicone to the tank ( see picture) , so drilling another drain is out unless I cut into the background. Trying to avoid this if possible as the background was expensive. I emailed the aquarium/overflow company and they said the over flow is only 1200 gph and that I need to drill another hole for or add canisters to increase my filtration. My husband says we can just raise the water level to the top of the H2O overflow line and increase the return pump sizes , which will force more water into the return and that will increase the turn over. Even so, im not sure if this can get my desired flow rate . Can anyone one think of anything I can do or anyway to tweak this system to get more out of it? I have a really big sump underneath that's not being used to it potential, so that idea of just slapping on canisters drives me crazy .

I have 2 holes in my 240. I tried some things. I put strainers in the holes. I put a tee in the hole and put a strainer on one end and the H2overflow thing on the other. I cut out every other tooth of the H2overflow.
you can click on this pic and make it bigger.

I ended up gluing overflow boxes to the glass on the inside. I also have an overflow box on the outside with 4 drains.

That a really nice background!
If it were me would figure a way to get herbie or bean animal going. To put all that work effort and planning into a single drain design would be disappointing
