I am setting up a new Marineland 93 gallon reef-ready tank and have a question on what size to use on the overflow line from the tank to the sump.

The overflow pipe that came with the tank (from the top of the tank to the bottom outlet bulkhead) is 1 1/2" PVC but goes into a reducer at the bottom that takes it down to 1" to go through the bulkhead. My sump has single inlet that is also 1" pipe. The return plumbing is all 1" pipe.

So is there any advantage at all (quieter? flow?) going with anything bigger than 1" from the overflow to the sump? Or is it the same if I just plumb everything at 1"?

Thanks!

I'd imagine the overflow type: bean animal, herbie, etc. and how it's implemented has a bigger impact on sound than reducing from 1.5 to 1. I personally run dual 1 inch drains straight to my sump, ghost overflow, with 3/4 returns... dead quiet.

CodyRVA,
My question is not how to modify my tank to make it quieter, the question is if there is any advantage in using either 1" or 1 1/2" plumbing to the sump since the overflow pipe supplied with the tank 1 1/2" but is reduced to 1" at the tank outlet. Just looking for recommendations on which size pipe to use.

On a 93G system, 1 inch drains and 3/4 returns are sufficient, but if it's already setup for 1 1/2 drains then I'd go with it.
