So I have a 125 gallon reef ready aquarium and I was looking at YouTube videos of feeding your corals and tanks. In the video it showed the person turn off his return pump skimmer and other things. So my question is as I turn off my return pump won't the water keep flowing down to the sump so do I turn the valve in my pic to turn off the overflow?

I dont see a picture, but your sump should be large enough to hold any water that drains down into it after the pumps are shut off. If it isn't then you might be in trouble in a power outage.

Alright thank you I feel dumb for asking this question and I have a emerald 39 sump so it's like a 40 gallon so I will be fine. Thanks again

In a reef ready tank it should only allow water to drain to the lowest part of the overflow plumbing. Typically meaning the drain pipe in the overflow (as long as your have an anti siphon hole in your return lines to prevent a back siphon). It has been my experience that once you get you plumbing set up how you want it fill the sump all the way (or less if you like) and turn the [umps on. You will notice the water level in the sump go down as it fill the plumbing and all that. Now once you turn the pump back off it will only go to that level it was previously.

Heck reading what I just posted confuses me so good luck with that but in short NO you do not need to turn any valves (as long as it is plumbed correctly) water will not keep draining.

Dont feel dumb for that! You dont know until you ask. :) Oh and the reason they turn the skimmer off is because as the sump fills with water it will raise the water level in the skimmer, this will make it go nuts and overflow.

I guess I am special since my skimmer is plumbed directly to the overflow so when I turn off my pump it stops sending water to my skimmer and its not in my sump so it cant effect my skimmer ;)

Awesome! That's pretty special to me. :D
