125g, will be using Exotic Marine or similar 24" overflow. Where would you locate the overflow and return(s), and why?

My first thought was back dead center, with dual returns on either side of the internal box, elbowed towards the side of the tank.

Second thought was overflow towards the right corner, with a single return in the left corner.

Depends, I like the overflow center & 2 returns over the back one in each corner .

I like the center middle idea... this also allows both your side walls (glass) to not be limited for powerhead placements... unlike if you have a corner overflow.

I have a corner overflow and wished i had a middle one on my tank.

I thought I would like the corner overflows; instead I hate them. Buying a new tank mostly for that reason lol

Bump?

I had a thought on center tank placement....being that it will be up against a wall, it may be a PITA to do any maintenance type work on the exterior overflow box or plumbing.

I wouldn't do a single return pointed toward the overflow. I set my tank up that way initially and it made a lot of noise with the water rushing through the weir teeth.

My overflow is located in the left corner of the tank. Originally had my return in the right corner.

I now have replumbed my return so that is comes up dead center where the center brace is then a wye with 2 locline and RFGs pointed slightly downward and towards each side

Hmmm, good to know. I mostly just wanna make sure that I have the best possible flow, especially until I can afford some decent wavemakers.

Guess it depends on what size return pump and what kind of coral

I'm running a return pump rated for around 1000gph plus two 1050 gph powerheads in my 75. All lps

1500ish on the return, 2x1600 powerheads, plan on upgrading, possibly to gyres, at some point. Mixed reef build.

In my mind, there needs to be some sort of circular current from return to overflow. If i was to copy your setup, overflow on left side, return Y'd in the center, my mind would see half of the return water flowing directly into the overflow. If that makes sense lol.

Sure but I have returns pointed downward so not directed water directly into overflow. Also running RFGs on each to randomize flow pattern. Running the two powerheads in a surge/gyre flow so I have really good random flow throughout. Even in and out of caves and overhangs. Definitely get a good gyre type flow in the tank

I was of the same mind that if the overflow was in the center I would have a tough time getting access to it. Running an eshopps eclipse L so similar to what you will have
