Just trying to figure out how high water should be in a reef ready corner overflow compared to main tank for effective surface skimming

I know I could drop it way down and it would skim like crazy but then the fall of the water is very loud what do you do to combat that I am not talking about the noise from the drain which is what all the discussions always end at with the op just dropping it cause everyone's telling him about Herbie and durso s but I'm talking about the waterfall sound

Right now I have t maybe 1/4 to half an inch below the main will that skim the surface enough?

I have mine about 3/4. My main reason bringing it up that high was to reduce the noise of the falling water. I don't know that it really matters for skimming, I think it's more of a personal preference.

Skimming the surface will be just as effective if the box is 1/4 full as 3/4 full. As long as water is being pulled into the box, the surface will be skimmed.
