Overflow

So my tank has a built-in overflow, this is the first tank I've had with an overflow and a sump. I cannot stand how loud the water draining into the Overflow is it's like a pouring sucking sound. Is this normal? Do any of you struggle with the same thing? If so how can I fix it?

What type of overflow are you using (as in how is the plumbing set up)? You should be able to get it silent if it's set up and tuned correctly. Mine is dead silent. Perhaps a photo would help as well.

Not sure what kind this is, it was like this when I bought the tank. A guy I have dealt with before sold it to me.

Are you able to run a return line from the sump up the back of the tank? I would be converting that overflow so that you were using both the holes as drains, set up as a herbie overflow. You want the overflow compartment to be full so that the water running into it isn't dropping to the bottom and splashing. Then you could run a new return line up the exterior of the tank hooked over the rim.
