So looks like I'll be trying my hand at drilling glass. That brings up the question of an overflow. Reef Creators sells an acrylic weir kit for cheap. I watched a BRS video where they set one up with the herbie method. Anyone done this ? I also looked at the Synergy ones for lot more money but they do seem very well engineered and better looking. What is the benefit of having a rear box vrs plumbing right off the back ?

The question is whats the best, In Tank overflow or External overflow?

Thanks with the help on the terminology. I was thinking external was the same as a HOB siphon which is what I'm trying to avoid.

Ok, Now that I know what to call it, I believe I want an external overflow. I'm looking at either the Fiji Cube or Synergy Reef. Both the 1600gal models. I have read the Modular Marine overflows are very popular but they seem to be out of business at the present time. I'm leaning towards the Fiji as the whole skimmer box is removable and o-ringed. Also it's on sale now and includes the hole saw. The Synergy also has some nice features though. Any opinions ? I want to get something ordered since my next step will be drilling the tank. I don't want waste the time resealing it in case my drilling goes boom.

I dont have experience with either one. One that can have a bean animal style drain is a good thing.

We went with the Fiji 20" model. It has 3 drains so it can use the bean animal style. That is how I plan to plumb it. It seemed the best deal I could find and I liked the design. I'm thinking to mount it in the middle and split my return with one on each end. I should mention this is on a 125g 6foot DT.
