Overgrown zoas

My zoas are getting rediculous. I want to add other corals but can't take my rock out and remove them as it is my whole structure. Can I just superglue new corals on top of the zoas? Or will they overtake a new coral placed amidst the zoa colony? Any help appreciated!

Lesson learned, zoas are pretty but the get their own island.

To answer your question I think it depends on the coral. Montipora might have a chance, but I imagine the zoanthids will over come Acopora.

Lol. I only have 1 kind I think she called them "eye of sauron" when i got them. But I've never found others called that. So they have a blueish center and orange frill. Under blues and all light. (I have an sbreef basic 16 and run whites at 30% and blues at 50%)

I blew them off so they'd retract so you could get a good look at the structure underneath

I had the same problem, I ripped them out with tweezers. Every few days I would rip out a few, within 2wks the rock is bare again. Even zoas in their own island isn’t safe, they will frag them self eventually once they have overgrown and have nowhere to grow. I have utter chaos and sunny ds doing just that.

You can, or you can take chisels and break the rock underneath to remove them. Then you can glue the pieces on frag plugs and either sell them or give them away. You have what appears to be a fairly desirable zoanthid there!

Do be cautious, as we never know which ones produce palytoxin, and which do not. Gloves and eye protection are a must!

I’d watch some YouTube videos on removing/fragging zoas and them sell them to local reefers. Before you start plucking heads out though do research on palytoxin for your safety.

The problem is, I can't take the entire rock out of the water. It is literally my entire structure. And I doubt the glass bottom of the tank would appreciate me hammer and chisseling on the rock on the glass... I am thinking about glueing pieces of rock or frag disks around the edge to make a border. Then when those are grown onto, replace them with new.

I had the same problem with SunnyD's, but luckily for me my Fox Face took a liking to them.

I believe those are Fire and Ice.

Aww man, no zoas for you then. What do you think about the pan with the frag disks and making a border?

Hm, I suppose if you don't mind a little genocide, you could just putty over them, I've seen other reefers do that with pallys and gsp. You might get a nutrient spike, but that's what water changes are for
