Hello everyone I have a 125g 72x18x23 tank looking to upgrade to a 180g 72x24x24
The space for the tank on the stand i have is is 74 1/2 x 23 1/2. Would it be safe to add 2x4 on the back side so the tank doesn't overhang or would you recommend a different stand. Stand is solid wood made from 2x4.

Yes as long you add the framing for the 2x4s as well and not just 2x4s at the top.

I would be very hesitant to trust about a ton of water, rock, etc. to anything less than a purpose built stand of the proper size.
Not sure if the stand was built for just the 125g bought it used I think that they built it themselves

Framing should go straight down to the floor correct? I'm a dummy when it comes to building I could build but I need those ikea instructions

If this is a RocketEngineer stand, that is so over-engineered, that you should be find. Basic plan looks like this before being skinned:

Would you put the plywood on top of the existing one or replace it?
Replace the plywood for one entire sheet. But yes framing should expend of the back on the stand to the floor. Basically mimic how the back framing of the stand is now and make sure it’s level as @redfishbluefish said. I think he can show you better ideas as well

If you can get it apart the you could just make the sides longer.
