Overly complex aquarium designs

If you watch enough youtube videos on aquariums you'll bound to come across this guy that tries out various design builds. Some leave me scratching my head on what the purpose of the design are. One in particular has a false bottom and false side wall with numerous bubble traps. It's almost like a maze for the water to flow through. I know they're for FW but why? Many of them employ a sump too so why the need for all the flow? And they gotta be noisy as heck with the drops.

I didn't post a link on purpose because I didn't want it to look like I was trying to promote the guy. But here's one that I was talking about.

 
thats pretty interesting.....
I don't fully understand the whole thing, like theres something going on with the bottom panel that i cant figure out but the back wall it looks like has the output of the return line at the very bottom of the tank and with the big U waterfall that it has to do i think would act as built in siphon break?

Incredible craftsmanship though to build that whole thing from scratch like that.
