What's up guys. My tank is finally up and running. Not coral ready yet but getting there. I ran ozone on my tank before I took it down. Was thinking about putting it back on for my new build. I just found out that you Cant keep macro algae when running ozone. Looking for some feed back. Especially from my fellow ozone reefers.

Hmmm thats a good question I have no experience with ozone but I have used uv alot and it works pretty well if setup correctly hopfully someone that has used both will chime in as id like to know also

Also why can't you keep macro as I really dont know and would like to

Please don't tell my chaeto, it might bother him.
Ozone into skimmer midnight to 8am, I use a uv ozone generator.
Skimmer is after the chaeto.
What did you like about ozone?

Hmm. I’ve been using ozone for years and my chaeto never told me it didn’t like ozone. I’ve never heard that before.

Other than that, UV and ozone accomplish 2 different things. I use ozone to essentially polish my water. It clarifies the water, getting that brownish / yellowish tint out. It probably doesn’t do much for disease control. I ran UV to kill parasites. I had a pretty bad ich outbreak that I got under control with 2 - 40watt sterilizers. I’ve heard it works well on dinos, but I don’t know what dinos are, so I can’t comment on that.

What are you looking to accomplish with ozone?

When I ran Ozone my water was crystal clear. I would like to accomplish the same thing. I read some where it also helps with ammonia. I would like to keep chaeto also. For those who's running ozone, do you have you intake tube outside for the ozone to pull in fresh air?

Not necessary, maybe detrimental if outside air is more humid.
I use a uv ozone generator, otherwise you must play the dehumidification game.

Mine pulls air through a desiccant (Air drier). My ozone generator uses a corona discharge, and needs dry air. But that air is just pulled from my house. Now on the output side of my skimmer (I inject ozone into my skimmer), I have a hose that runs outside so that the ozone gas is discharged outside instead of into my house.

I have the same ozone. I had it to an old skimmer I used to have. I had modified the skinmer cup so it can hold the carbon. Can you take a pic of your output part of the skimmer where you running the hose outside of your house. That dont sound like a bad idea.

It might be a little hard to follow, but my skimmer is sealed. The skimmate and air goes out that braided vinyl hose into that blue collection cup. That collection cup has a vinyl hose out the top that wraps over my furnace cold air intake pvc pipe, and into my old furnace chimney vent. So even the moisture from my skimmer gets vented outside instead of into my house.

Ozone is effective against parasites as far as i know of.

That is probably true when it’s running. But I don’t know anyone that would run ozone 24-7-365 that wouldn’t drive their ORP through the roof. So if it cycles off, it is not killing parasites at that time. Mine is on an ORP controller, so it only cycles on to bring my ORP back up, which is not frequently enough to keep parasites under control.

Currently i run uv. Back in the day, late 80s, many of us ran low output ozone 24/7.
Everything is a give and take. Set up equipment properly, scaled to whats needed and it works 100%. Our biggest worry back then wS poisoning our tank or whole house with ozone. Thats not an issue with uv though.

So question for the ozone guys here does ozone and activated carbon as far as making the water clear have similar effects or does ozone polish it even farther then activated carbon alone if the op is only trying to polish the water removing the yellow tint carbon will do (enless ozone does it better idk anything about ozone never used it) that and uv will sterilize how I run my tanks but again if never used ozone and dont know anything about it

Carbon absorbs , while ozone destroys, pigment causing particals. Ozone is an oxidizer like chlorine bleach is. Hope that makes sense. Ozone helps skimmers remove waste

Ahhh ty for the reply had no clue so then ozone would more then likly polish the water better as there is a limit to how much carbon can take out while it sounds like ozone crystallizes the water so to speak and did not know that about it helping protein skimmers (I dont use them)

I was using a UV sterilizer for dinos during the first 6 months of the tank. I switched to ozone and haven’t seen a huge difference in water clarity but I do see higher ORP numbers.

Carbon is better for removing pollution such as chemical contamination as far as i know. Ozone attacks organics better.

Ya carbon does not do much at all for organics if anything good to know about ozone carbon does a great job at chemicals tho and some minerals unfortunately

When I used ozone I supplied my ozone generator air from an oxygen machine like someone would use Hooked to there nose for breathing in there house. Wow what a difference it made the ozone work much much better
