Oy .... somebody’s confused. Paracanthurus Hepatus is the pacific blue tang with lots of different names .... hippo, regal, palette .... all the same fish. It grows quite quickly and is a highly idiosyncratic fish, particularly when cramped. Very small hippo tangs have a poor survival rate. I would not personally put one in a 40 gallon tank. Needs at least a six foot tank, eight is better.

Hello, does anyone know if I can temporary keep a Pacific Blue Tang in a 40 gallon tank for a year since they are slow growers and I really want a blue tang. Will this pose any problems with the health of my tank?

Pacific and Atlantic blue tangs are very different. Atlantics are all blue and Pacifics look like hippo tangs and look like "dory"
they both need like 75-100 gallons full grown and maybe even 125 if yours out grows it. A 40 would be fine for like only a couple of months if u buy a small one. tank mates can be anything except for large predatory fish and other blue tangs
feed vegetable matter every day

What about a powder blue?

A powder blue would be a worse choice than a Pacific blue. They are more active, more aggressive, and aren't sold as "tiny" juveniles.
