Paint Protection for Rear Glass

I recently painted the back of my aquarium with to layers of black Krylon Fusion spray paint. When I was installing my external overflow box, the paint was easily scratched off in areas where the overflow box rubbed against it while maneuvering it into place.

Is there something that I can put over the paint to keep it from being scratched off? I assume that an enamel will help, but I'd love to get some feedback before giving it a try.

Stuff is $20 a can but is a professional 2PART clearcoat paint. 1part paint / 1part glue adhesive. But all inside one can. The bottom of the can theres a button you push to break the seal of glue/adhesive within the can. You got 48hrs to spray the can b4 all the paint inside the can turns solid

If you have any professional auto paint stores around you, all the body shop pros know about this stuff. It can be bought locally where you buy professional auto paint over the counter.

End results is a clearcoat that is tough....like rockhard glass

My only concern is.... does the tank already have fish and corals in it? Will you be forced to paint it where it sits indoors?

The vapors off this stuff while painting are no joke. You, the painter need to wear a mask. Unless you like killing braincells while feeling dizzy and nauseous

But if you use it, it'll be bulletproof.

And if you use it, the stuff ain't coming back off easily. You're pretty much married to it once you use it

Thanks, I’ll give that a look! The tank is new, and it has nothing in it, so I can paint it in the garage.

I tend to find oil based enamel rolled on is more durable than spray paint.
Nowadays I tend to use vinyl instead of paint, on most of my tanks.
You could also just place cardboard between the tank and the overflow while you tighten your bulkheads and remove when finished

This paint is amazing, used it to restore headlights, 2 years later, still looks brand new, but....


YOU MUST ABSOLUTELY WEAR RESPIRATOR WITH THIS PRODUCT, unless you dont care if somebody else takes care of your reef.

Do you cut any vinyl away to make room for bulkhead gaskets to make contact with the glass?

I have done it both ways. I probably wouldn't bother with cutting it away. When you paint the aquarium back, the bulkhead gaskets are in contact with a the paint film and not the glass (unless you left space of course). You can cut away the vinyl behind the inner overflow box, as you can't see it anyway. If you are drilling the return I would just have the gasket on the vinyl.
