If I keep my existing stand and canopy my wife asked me to make it black to match other stuff in the room.

It is a stained wood that has a glossy finish, its a medium brown color with a redish tint.

Can I just paint over it? I don't what to sand it as there is a lot of groves and such that would be hard as get out to sand.

Sand it a little, than primer- i am still fan of oil base one! Once it all dry 2 coats of paint. Enjoy!

Your will need to sand it first. Not completely to bare wood just a light sanding so the paint will stick to it. 80- 120 grit sandpaper should do the trick. Then just wipe it down with paint thinner or denatured alcohol to pick up all the dust.

I concur. Just slapping a coat of paint on top of a gloss finish is unlikely to produce acceptable results. You don't need to go overboard, but a good once-over with 80 grit would go a long way towards insuring success. Then, a coat of primer, and a good top coat.

You said you want it black, but not what flavor of black...

I really like Rustoleum's Topside marine paint on aquarium stands. Goes on easy, covers well, dries hard, very good water protection, and gives you a nice glossy finish. Match it up with Rustoleum's marine primer, and you're going to be happy with the results.
