I have a new Aqueon stand for my 120 and was thinking about covering the inside and maybe even the outside with either a clear waterproofing or getting black waterproofing and going over it. Should I even do this and what is the recommended paint/waterproofer? (if in the wrong forum please move) thank you

Any clear polyurethane should work for the outside. Spray cans would probably be easiest.

For the inside I prefer using something epoxy based- much stronger. But either works.

Thank you, any epoxy you prefer?

Looks to be pine.

1st thing I would do is tear out the bottom panel as that appears to be MDF and replace it with plywood.

If you're going to use poly on the outside, I would recommend giving the stand a light sanding first. Enough sanding to get rid of the sheen of the paint. Then vacuum and wipe it down very well.

If you're going to use epoxy on the inside no sanding should be necessary as I do not believe they would have used an oil based paint. If it does happen to be oil based then you'll want to sand the inside too.

Water or oil based for the spray can, and would the Behr epoxy paint be okay?

I just painted my DIY stand and hood. I used the epoxy for the inside and a semi gloss latex for the outside. I’d certainly shy away from sprays.
the latex took 3 coats and looks great. I did 3 coats of the epoxy on the inside. The epoxy goes on surprisingly thin. 4 coats would have looked better, but painting the inside is no fun task. I was confident 3 gave me a good deal for spills and humidity. The 4th would have been for aesthetics if I would have done it.

Any of the paints suggested would work just fine. The only thing I would suggest iis painting the inside white rather than black. Never once have I though "gee - I sure wish it was harder to see inside here"

I agree. I bought an awful stand from Petco once (big mistake) and it was black, and basically impossible to see inside so I painted it white - what a difference!

Just finished painting the inside of my new stand white. Most stands these days are some grade of MDF with a vinyl veneer. So you use a sanding block to sand the vinyl to give the the paint a surface to adhere too
The recommend paint for covering vinyl veneer is a chalk based paint.
I had to paint four coats to cover up the inside black veneer. The make a clear coat to go over the chalk paint.
