I have female lightening maroon paired with a gold dot maroon. I had the female lightening approximately 3.5 inches before I introduced the approximately 1.5 inch male. It was love at first sight, and they never have any kind of lovers quarrel at all. My question is it’s been more than two years, and it seems like both fish stopped growing. I feed them well, they are in a 75 gallon tank full of rose bubble tip anemones that they adore. Is this common for them to stop growing? Perhaps the female is as big as she’s going to get and some kind of hormone prevents the male from getting any bigger So that the size difference stays the same?

The size sounds about right for the male, but the females are supposed to get huge, 6 inches or more. Unfortunately beyond that, I don't know, but am curious if anyone does know.

Maybe they grow fast as younguns, and slow down as they age? My maroon easily doubled in size over his first year.

My maroon is probably close to 4" at 8 years and they can live for over 20 years or more so still time to grow bigger. She's a real beast ! I noticed that after a very apparent color change in a short period when the white bands became more yellow, she grew really quickly compared to before, so my guess is that she became female then. She also eats a ton more than my male. I wonder if they self regulate their eating in order to remain smaller or perhaps like you said some hormone kicks in and drives the growth. I've had my male for a little over a year now and he's gotten slightly bigger but has a long way to go to catch up. Here's a crappy pic of the two. Shes almost as tall as he is long.
