Hey all,
I have a tail spot blenny in my 110 gal. She has been there a few months and is a model citizen. Eats lots of algae, poops on corals, and is super friendly and social with other fish.

I would like to get her a mate. I believe she is a female since she has a rounded tail with no top and bottom streamers.

What are my odds of her pairing up with, or at least accepting the presence of, a male tail spot? I would get one off DD where I can easily see the tail streamers.

Thanks for you help!

Live aquaria would be a good source and I think, given time and if they tolerate each other, being conspecific, they would seek out each other.

110 gallons is a big place for two little blennies normally kept in nano tanks. If they don't get along at first they will likely just choose a different end of the tank to set up their territory and leave each other alone.

I've tried pairing them twice and it didn't go well. I chose a larger one with streamers and one smaller without. As I was working in a shop I had plenty to chose from and put them in adjoining tanks where they could see each other. They looked fine after a week so I put them together. After another couple of weeks they seemed to be doing fine so I brought them home and added to my reef (around 300 litres). Again they were fine for a month or two but then really started beating each other up to the point one died. I caught the victor and moved him to another tank and tried the whole process again with another two that were similar in size. My thoughts on this were that maybe I'd been unlucky and got an immature males to begin with so adding similar sized fish where I could be more confident that there were each sex, was a better approach. Unfortunately over the same time frame it happened again like deja vu. So I'm not completely convinced that streamers are sign of sex.

Just noticed that I forgot to mention the second attempt was again with a tail streamer fish and a non tailstreamer, they were just closer in size this time.

Had 1 for 3 months so far in a 14g frameless just added another. I've read everything I've found on sexing these guys and apparently nobody knows. So I'm hoping i got lucky

I have been lucky with pairing 2 tailspot blennys. They are both in a Aqueon 14g frameless nano at the moment and enjoying life. They look almost identical. The way I did it was... as much research as possible for me to feel comfortable in making the decision. Then being in WV with the closest reputable LFS an hour away. I found an awesome petco 20min away and that's where I got both of them. I can say the orange stripe on the face of the female is half as long as the orange stripe on the face of the male. But I made my decision %100 going by behavior alone. You can just tell if you watch them long enough,it was only months after I had both that I started noticing small differences in their appearance. I hope this helps someone. Any questions please ask
